Ignition temperature

The ignition temperature for polymers is defined as the minimum temperature where a polymer will automatically burn at normal atmosphere with oxygen content of approx. 20% and normal pressure independent of the source.

Infra red welding

The welding by means of infrared light is called infrared welding. It is a welding method that is used mainly for high performance polymers, mostly pipes and fittings or small parts for the automotive industry.

Integral skin foam
Integral skin foam is a type of foam where the skin has a higher density than the core.

Iodine is a halogen with the symbol I. Iodine is very aggressive and under normal atmosphere solid. Due to the high reactivity only fluorinated polymers are resistant against iodine.

An Ion is an electrically charged atom or molecule. Ions could be found also in watery salt solutions. These solutions are normally not a problem for polymers but for metals due to corrosion. Only oxidizing solutions could attack some non chlorinated or non-fluorinated polymers.

Ion exchanger
Ion exchanger is equipment where ions are exchanged between two electrolytes. Ion exchanger are mainly build out of thermosets. 

Polymers are mainly electrical and thermal isolators.
Heat or thermal isolation is a material property to decrease the heat flow or the heat transfer.
The electrical isolation reduces the flow of electrons or ions in a solution. The electrical resistivity of an isolator is very high and in ideal cases infinite.

Isostatic pressing
Isostatic pressing is a process to produce sheets out of polymer powder or granulates where by means of a uniform pressure the porosity is reduced: e.g. PTFE is produced by means of isostatic pressing.
